Boat For Sail

A boat for sail, not for sale.

Sailing for all. We give the sport away — free lessons, free videos, free boat plans, and a shared fleet — so anyone can learn to sail, whatever’s in their wallet. Sailing is one of the last skills that asks for your whole self: wind, water, body, and judgment, all at once. No screen replaces it.

Our mission

To teach sailing to the general public — youth, adults, everyone — entirely free of charge. We’re preserving a vital human skill and the direct connection between wind, water, and body that no artificial intelligence can replicate or replace.

We are sailors and sailing-industry people who decided the best thing we could do with what we know is to give it away: the lessons, the videos, the boat plans, and the network that gets a new sailor onto the water.

The four things we’re building

🎓 A free curriculum

A complete, start-to-finish path from “never touched a boat” to “can take others out.” Open, sequenced, and free forever. → Learn to Sail

🎬 A video library

Every skill, filmed on the water, so you can watch before you go and review after. → Videos

🤝 A host network

Experienced sailors sign up to take learners out. It gets real people onto real boats — and gets the community involved. → Host a Sailor

🛶 The free boat

A simple one-design anyone can build cheaply from readily available materials — designed to be given away. → The Free Boat

Why free

Free programs make the strongest possible case for a public charity — and they’re just the right thing to do. Sailing has been gatekept by cost and access for generations. A learner shouldn’t need a yacht club membership or a rich uncle to feel a sail fill for the first time. We remove the price tag entirely and let philanthropy and community carry the rest.

The legal vehicle for this is an Illinois 501(c)(3) nonprofit, currently in formation. The full formation story — governance, budget, and the DIY playbook — lives under The Nonprofit.
